THE FIELD VERSION
What we can actually verify
New York has no public place in this guide that we classify as an officially designated clothing-optional area. We do track Potter's Falls in Ithaca as an informal public-land naturist/sunbathing location with a clear legal caveat, alongside verified private venues such as Empire Haven.
Potter's Falls: informal use, not official permission
Potter's Falls in Ithaca is now tracked as an amber Field Station. Visit Ithaca calls the Six Mile Creek site a favorite sunbathing spot, but no public agency designates it clothing optional. New York public-exposure law still applies. Our May 2026 firsthand Dispatch describes the mixed public setting, including college-age visitors and dog walkers passing through.
The current visitor listing also says swimming is prohibited and warns about steep sections and poor footing. So Potter's belongs in the database as an informal tradition with real caveats, not as a legal nude beach.
How to plan this region
Fire Island matters because old travel advice lingers online. The National Park Service ended the former clothing-optional use at Lighthouse Beach in 2013 and its 2026 compendium says New York public-nudity law is applied within the national seashore.
New York State Parks regulations also prohibit appearing nude in public on facilities under the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. That does not tell you the rules for every private property, club, municipal beach, or event in the state; it does tell you not to treat a remote state-park shoreline as automatically clothing optional.
For a clearly documented public beach experience in the broader Northeast, our nearest verified Field Station in this guide is Gunnison Beach in New Jersey.
