Stay inside the signed traditional-use area

The Gateway superintendent’s compendium says a portion of Area G at South Gunnison is used as a clothing-optional area and that visitors are advised through signs. Nudity outside the signed area may be considered disorderly conduct.

Alcohol is not allowed at Sandy Hook

The NPS Gunnison page lists alcohol as prohibited at Sandy Hook. Do not build your beach plan around coolers of beer or cocktails.

Flotation devices are prohibited at Gunnison

The Gateway compendium specifically prohibits flotation devices at Gunnison and North Beach because of strong currents and safety concerns.

There are no lifeguards

This is not a rule so much as a critical operating fact. Gunnison has no lifeguard service, so water decisions are your responsibility and NPS recommends using lifeguarded beaches for swimming.

Pet access changes seasonally

NPS says pets are not allowed on ocean-side beaches from March 15 through September 15 to protect nesting shorebirds. Leashed pets are allowed on bay-side beaches year-round.

Respect resource-protection closures

Shorebird nesting areas and other portions of Sandy Hook may have additional closures or setbacks. Posted signs on the day of your visit override a cached guide.
